At Okanagan Natural Medicine we provide in-depth health care services for patients of all ages. During menopause, a woman can become significantly impacted or even disabled by symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain and incontinence. When a menopausal woman is in a hormonal transition, the “menopausal cocktail” she is offered by most physicians are pharmaceutical anti-depressants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety pills, pain killers and more. Our physicians take the time to understand each woman's issues and develop a program that suits that woman. Concerned women can also be assessed for increased risk of other midlife conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
Dr. Shelby Entner provides today's women with the specialized medical guidance and support they want and value. With over 10 years of experience in gynaecology and bio-identical hormones, Dr. Entner has continued to uncover new ways of supporting a woman’s hormonal transition. Board certified by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, the largest natural hormone/anti aging institute in North America, Dr. Entner has taken advanced professional training in Adult Hormone Deficiencies and has expertise in prescribing bio-identical hormones and advising on appropriate lifestyle adjustments to help manage challenges.

Bio-identical is the name given to hormones that have the exact same molecular structure as the hormones naturally produced by the human body. A hormone exerts its effect on a cell receptor in the same fashion that a key would insert into a lock. Any deviation from the molecular structure of the hormone will cause problems when it tries to fit into the receptor. Synthetic hormones are similar, but not identical. Since patents are not permitted for natural substances, some pharmaceutical companies made small changes to the hormone structure so that the differences qualified for a patent and can become a multi-million dollar selling drug.
Synthetic hormones are prescribed in traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The problem with synthetic hormones is that although they are able to squeeze into the hormone receptor, the message they send to the cell is different than a natural hormone. This means that the body functions controlled by the hormone are either not functioning as intended or in some cases, not functioning at all. Synthetic hormones have also been linked to unintentional side effects, since they are not identical to the naturally occurring hormones in the human body.
Bio-identical hormones are synthesized in a laboratory and this fact may cause some confusion. In the laboratory, sterols from plants such as soy and wild yam are used to create bio-identical hormones. Other natural materials can be used to achieve the same natural hormones, but these plant sterols are the easiest to transform into human hormones. The starting material is less important. The fact that hormones produced in this way are identical to natural human hormones is what produces the beneficial effects. Products that are bought online or over the counter without a physician’s prescription may have little active ingredient or can be dangerous.
The types, combinations and dosages of bio-identical hormones are customized to fit each individual patient and will be discussed in the course of your treatment. The most common hormones prescribed are Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone and DHEA. The majority of bio-identical hormone prescriptions will need to be prepared by a compounding pharmacy in their own labs. These pharmacies adhere to strict regulations and certifications to ensure accuracy and quality when preparing the medicine as prescribed by the physician.
Bio-identical natural hormones are anti-inflammatory and therefore anti-aging by their nature of action. Bio-identical hormones fit into receptor sites like a lock and key mechanism. The effect of the hormones is specific to the dose required by the bio-identical hormones. Our goal is to prevent the diseases of aging: heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity and arthritis using the best science available. Hormones work thru out our body, keeping key metabolic functions active and protecting our cells’ DNA.
Bio-identical Hormone Specialists, Okanagan Natural Medicine’s physicians can provide you with all of the safety information, answer your questions, discuss hormone testing and provide the general guidance you need. We measure and we monitor our patients who are on our programs, ensuring the right combination and the right dose for each individual patient.

Menopause - A gradual process that happens when a woman's ovaries make less estrogen and progesterone. A woman is considered to have reached menopause when she hasn't menstruated for twelve months. Natural menopause typically occurs between ages of 41-59.
Symptoms of menopause include: hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, mood swings, sudden tears, trouble sleeping through the night, loss of libido, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.
Andropause - Andropause is the period of a man's life, occurring usually between the ages of 45 and 55, marked by a drop in testosterone hormone levels. Body changes occur and may be accompanied by symptoms such as changes in attitudes and moods, weight gain, fatigue, a loss of energy, loss of sex drive, lowered physical agility and more. It is a phenomenon similar to the female menopause but is seldom discussed in medicine. A decline in hormones for men can be as difficult as menopause can be for women and is also a condition that can lead to an increased risk in heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Thyroid - An imbalance in the thyroid hormones can affect every metabolic function in your body. Thyroid hormone modulates fat metabolism, vitamin uses, digestion, muscle and nerve action, blood flow, hormone excretion, oxygen utilization and sexual function. Common symptoms of low thyroid function are constipation, fatigue, weight gain, poor concentration, poor circulation and depression.
Weight Loss Resistance – Hormones are normally the culprits that lead to weight loss difficulties and resistance. Our overall body composition is greatly dependent on having balanced hormones, a healthy digestive tract, a balanced diet and an awareness of food allergies. Balancing hormones can help to regulate weight in both men and women and with our specialized Weight Loss Program, can be tailored to your individual needs. One program does not fit all.
Adrenal Fatigue - Adrenal fatigue is a stress-induced condition characterized by a set of common symptoms which often mimic other hormonal imbalances. Symptoms often include chronic infections, fatigue, sleep disturbance, IBS, and anxiety.
